The 2.5L AMC and 2.4L PowerTech four-cylinders in the TJ Wrangler are torque-focused engines designed for crawling, not highway speed. The factory airbox — with its restrictive snorkel, baffled resonator chambers, and corrugated rubber intake hose — was engineered for noise compliance, not airflow. On the highway or with larger tires, that restriction becomes a real liability.

Flashark's intake kit replaces the entire factory assembly with a 3-inch (Φ76 mm) thermally wrapped aluminum intake tube and a high-flow dry-cotton conical filter. The thermal wrap is the key differentiator here: unlike bare-metal pipes that absorb radiant heat from the exhaust manifold, the wrapped tube actively rejects engine-bay heat, keeping intake air cooler where it matters most — in the tube itself.

Installation uses the TJ's factory airbox mounting points, no cutting or welding required. You get improved throttle response, a deeper induction note that actually sounds like a real engine, and a cleaner engine bay — all bolt-on and reversible in under an hour.

Key Features

3" Thermal-Wrapped Aluminum Intake Tube — Mandrel-bent aluminum pipe with integrated thermal insulation wrap that rejects radiant heat from the exhaust side. Not just a painted pipe — the wrap layer actively keeps intake air cooler than bare metal alternatives.

High-Flow Dry Cotton Conical Filter — Red cotton gauze cone: 120 mm steel top cap / 180 mm PU base / 76 mm inlet with dedicated clamp. Washable and reusable — no oil required, ever.

Precision Silicone Reducer Coupler — Φ63 × Φ76 mm reducer transitions smoothly from the 3" intake tube to the factory throttle body inlet, eliminating the step-change turbulence of the stock rubber accordion hose.

Direct-Fit CCV Breather Line — Reinforced D19-d13 × 175 mm breather hose with Φ10 mm brass nipple, connects directly to factory PCV/CCV plumbing on both 2.5L AMC and 2.4L PowerTech engines.

Complete Bolt-On Hardware Kit — Aluminum bracket with brass-sleeved M6 anchor bolt, anti-vibration foam strip (560 mm), 2× narrow-band stainless steel clamps (84×108 mm), and full M6 washers and nuts.

No-Trim, No-Weld Installation — Uses factory airbox mounting points. Installation is fully reversible in 45-60 minutes with basic hand tools.

No Check Engine Light — Maintains correct MAF/IAT sensor positioning and factory breather routing on both naturally aspirated 2.5L and 2.4L applications. No tune required on compatible engines.

Protective Plastic Shield Included — Adds a layer of splash and debris protection for the filter, a practical inclusion for a vehicle that sees off-road use.

Years Make Model Engine
1997–2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ 2.5L AMC I4
2003–2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ 2.4L PowerTech I4

Q1: Which TJ engines does this intake fit?

A: This kit fits the 2.5L AMC four-cylinder (1997–2002) and the 2.4L PowerTech four-cylinder (2003–2006) in the Jeep Wrangler TJ. Both engines share the same throttle body flange diameter and breather routing, so the same reducer coupler and breather line work for both.

Q2: Does this fit the 4.0L six-cylinder TJ?

A: No. The 4.0L intake manifold uses a different throttle body diameter, different breather routing, and different mounting points. The reducer coupler in this kit (Φ63 × Φ76 mm) will not mate to the 4.0L throttle body. Do not purchase for a 4.0L TJ.

Q3: Will this work on my 1997–2002 TJ with the 2.5L?

A: Yes. The kit is designed for the 1997–2002 TJ with the 2.5L AMC four-cylinder. It uses the factory airbox mounting points and connects to the stock throttle body and breather plumbing.

Q4: Will this work on my 2003–2006 TJ with the 2.4L?

A: Yes. The 2003–2006 TJ received the 2.4L PowerTech engine (shared with the Dodge Neon SRT-4 and PT Cruiser). The throttle body flange diameter is the same as the 2.5L, so the reducer coupler fits both engine families.

Q5: What's the difference between the 2.5L AMC and the 2.4L PowerTech?

A: The 2.5L AMC (1997–2002) is a pushrod engine — simple, iron block, timing chain, 120 hp / 140 lb-ft. The 2.4L PowerTech (2003–2006) is a DOHC design — aluminum head, timing belt, 147 hp / 165 lb-ft. Despite the completely different architecture, their intake plumbing is similar enough that the same reducer coupler and breather nipple work for both. This is why a single kit covers both engines.

Q6: How much horsepower will I gain?

A: On a stock 2.5L or 2.4L TJ, expect 3–7 WHP and marginally improved throttle response. These are 120–147 hp utility engines designed for torque and durability, not peak power. An intake alone will not transform the driving experience — the real benefit is the induction sound, the reusable filter, and the cleaner engine bay. If your TJ is struggling on the highway, an intake is not the solution; proper gearing for your tire size is.

Q7: Is this intake worth it on a four-cylinder TJ?

A: It depends on what you want. If you want a more aggressive induction sound, a reusable filter you can clean after trail days, a less restrictive intake path, and a cleaner-looking engine bay — yes. If you're expecting a dramatic horsepower transformation that makes your 33s feel like stock tires, no intake in the world will do that. The four-cylinder TJ's performance ceiling is set by displacement and gearing, not the factory airbox.

Q8: Will this help my TJ with big tires?

A: Smoother intake flow may slightly improve throttle response, but it cannot compensate for the mechanical disadvantage of oversized tires on stock axle gearing. If your four-cylinder TJ is struggling to maintain highway speed on 31s or 33s, the correct fix is re-gearing your axles — not an intake. The intake is a supporting mod, not a replacement for proper gearing.

Q9: Does the thermal wrap actually make a difference?

A: Yes, compared to a bare metal pipe. The aluminum tube is wrapped in a thermal insulation layer that rejects radiant heat from the exhaust manifold, which sits close to the intake path on both 2.5L and 2.4L TJs. The wrap does not eliminate heat soak when idling or crawling at low speed (no intake can), but it significantly reduces the rate at which the intake tube absorbs heat once you're moving. Intake air temperatures recover faster after a stoplight or a trail obstacle than after a bare pipe.

Q10: Do I need a tune after installing this?

A: No. On the 2.5L AMC and 2.4L PowerTech engines, the factory ECU can adapt to the small change in airflow within its closed-loop fuel trim range. All breather connections and sensor positions must be reconnected correctly — a tune should not be used to mask vacuum leaks or installation errors.

Q11: Will this cause a check engine light or rough idle?

A: Not when installed correctly. The most common causes of a CEL after intake installation are: a disconnected or cracked breather hose (unmetered air leak), a loose or damaged IAT sensor, a coupler not fully seated at the throttle body, or a clamp that isn't tight enough. Double-check all connections before cranking the engine.

Q12: Will my TJ sound different with this intake?

A: Yes, noticeably. The open-element dry filter and unrestricted aluminum tube produce a deeper, throatier induction sound — especially under load or at higher RPM. This is intake-side noise, not exhaust. On a four-cylinder TJ, the change is particularly noticeable because the factory intake system was heavily silenced.

Q13: Is this safe for off-roading, water crossings, and dusty trails?

A: The open-element filter should stay well clear of deep water — ingesting liquid water can hydrolock the engine and cause catastrophic damage. The included plastic shield provides some splash protection but is not a substitute for a snorkel. On dusty trails, inspect and clean the filter more frequently than on-road use. If your TJ regularly sees deep water crossings or extreme dust, a sealed factory airbox or a proper snorkel system is the safer choice.

Q14: How do I clean the filter?

A: The filter is dry cotton gauze — no oil required. When the pleats are visibly packed with dust or debris: (1) Tap the filter gently to dislodge loose dirt. (2) Rinse from the inside out with low-pressure water — never from the outside in, which drives debris deeper. (3) Use a mild filter cleaner if needed. (4) Rinse thoroughly. (5) Allow to air-dry completely before reinstalling. In dusty off-road conditions, clean every 5,000–10,000 miles. On pavement, 15,000–20,000 miles.

Q15: What's included and how hard is the install?

A: The kit includes the thermal-wrapped 3" aluminum intake tube, dry cotton conical filter, Φ63×76 mm silicone reducer coupler, breather hose with brass nipple, 2× stainless clamps, aluminum mounting bracket with brass-sleeved anchor bolt, anti-vibration foam strip, plastic filter shield, and all M6 hardware. Installation uses the factory airbox mounting points — no cutting, no drilling, no welding. Estimate 45–60 minutes with basic hand tools. Fully reversible.
