High-flow cold air intake kit for 2003-2008 Mazda 6 (first-gen, GG/GY platform) with 2.3L MZR I4 or 3.0L Duratec V6. Fits all trims (S, GS, GT, i) across Sedan, Hatchback, and Wagon body styles. Mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube with black powder-coated finish and dry reusable cone filter. +5-8 WHP, sharper throttle response, deeper intake sound. Bolt-on installation in ~30 minutes — no tuning required. Engine-specific variants available: select the correct option for your 2.3L or 3.0L engine.
Overview
The first-generation Mazda 6 was engineered as a driver's car in the family-sedan segment — sharp handling, communicative steering, and a willing engine. But the factory intake system was tuned for mass-market NVH targets, not performance. The stock airbox routes intake air through a restrictive multi-chamber plastic resonator, choking airflow and muffling the engine note that Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" marketing promised, but the factory never delivered.
The FLASHARK Cold Air Intake Kit replaces the entire factory airbox with a mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube and a high-flow dry cone filter, drawing cooler, denser air away from the exhaust manifold. Dyno testing shows gains of 5-8 WHP, with the most noticeable improvement in the 3,000-5,000 RPM mid-range — exactly where the 2.3L MZR and 3.0L Duratec V6 do their daily driving work. The factory ECU adapts automatically via fuel trim learning; no reflash or piggyback needed.
Installation is a true bolt-on — 30 minutes with basic hand tools, all factory mounting points reused. The dry filter is washable and reusable. The black powder-coated finish integrates cleanly with the engine bay, and the deeper intake sound under throttle finally delivers the character that the stock airbox spent years hiding.
Important: The 2.3L I4 and 3.0L V6 use different intake layouts and require different variants of this kit. Select the correct engine option when ordering.
Key Features
Mandrel-Bent Aluminum Intake Tube — Smooth internal walls eliminate the turbulence of the factory plastic tract. Black powder-coated finish resists corrosion and engine bay heat.
High-Flow Dry Cone Filter — Oil-free cotton gauze media captures debris without contaminating the MAF sensor. Washable and reusable — no oil recharge kits needed.
Engine-Specific Design — Separate variants for the 2.3L MZR I4 and 3.0L Duratec V6. Each variant routes the intake properly for its engine bay layout, MAF position, and throttle body orientation.
True Bolt-On Fitment — Pre-drilled brackets align with factory mounting points. All couplers, clamps, and hardware included. No cutting, drilling, or permanent modifications.
MAF & Sensor-Ready — Integrated provisions for the factory MAF sensor, intake air temperature sensor, and PCV breather. No check engine light when installed correctly.
Enhanced Induction Sound — The deeper intake growl under throttle finally delivers the character that Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" branding promised. Noticeably louder at wide-open throttle, minimal drone at cruise.

Q: Are the 2.3L and 3.0L intakes the same?
A: No. The 2.3L MZR I4 and 3.0L Duratec V6 use different intake layouts, MAF sensor positions, and throttle body orientations. This product listing includes two engine-specific variants. Selecting the wrong engine option will result in a kit that does not fit. Always verify your engine displacement before ordering — the V6 models are typically badged as "S", "GS", or "GT" trim, while the 2.3L is "i" trim.
Q: Does this fit the Mazdaspeed 6?
A: No. The Mazdaspeed 6 (Mazda 6 MPS) uses a turbocharged 2.3L DISI direct-injection engine with a top-mount intercooler. The intake plumbing runs from the turbo inlet through the intercooler — completely different from a naturally aspirated intake. Using this kit on a Mazdaspeed 6 will not work. Search for a Mazdaspeed 6-specific intake or turbo inlet pipe.
Q: Does this fit the 2009+ Mazda 6?
A: No. This kit is designed for the first-generation Mazda 6 (2003-2008, GG/GY platform). The second-generation 2009-2013 (GH) and third-generation 2014+ (GJ) Mazda 6 use different engine bay layouts and are not compatible.
Q: How much HP will I gain?
A: Dyno testing shows 5-8 WHP on a stock 2.3L or 3.0L engine, concentrated in the 3,000-5,000 RPM mid-range. The more noticeable real-world improvement is throttle response — the engine feels more eager to rev, and part-throttle pickup is sharper in daily driving. Peak numbers are modest because the factory ECU's fuel trim adapts conservatively, but the improvement in drivability is substantial.
Q: Do I need an ECU tune after installing?
A: No. The factory ECU uses adaptive short- and long-term fuel trim learning and will automatically compensate for airflow changes within normal driving parameters. You can install and drive immediately. If your car has additional mods (aftermarket exhaust, headers), a tune will help maximize combined gains, but is not required for this intake alone.
Q: Is the filter oiled or dry?
A: Dry. The included red cone filter uses oil-free cotton gauze media. This is a deliberate choice for Mazda engines — hot-wire MAF sensors are easily contaminated by over-oiled aftermarket filters, leading to erratic readings, lean conditions, and check engine lights. No oil recharge kit required. Simply wash with water and mild detergent, dry completely, and reinstall.
Q: Will this cause a check engine light?
A: No — when properly installed with all sensors, couplers, and breather hoses connected securely. The most common cause of a CEL after installation is a vacuum leak from an improperly seated coupler or a loose MAF sensor connection. Double-check all clamps and electrical connectors if a light appears. The code will typically be a P0171/P0174 (lean condition), indicating an air leak.
Q: Does this fit the Hatchback and Wagon?
A: Yes. The kit is compatible with Sedan, Hatchback, and Wagon body styles for the 2003-2008 Mazda 6. The engine bay layout and intake routing are identical across all three body styles on the same engine. Choose the variant that matches your engine (2.3L or 3.0L), not your body style.
Q: How does the intake sound change?
A: The removal of the factory resonator box produces a noticeably deeper intake growl under throttle — especially above 3,000 RPM and at wide-open throttle. The 3.0L V6 develops a throaty induction note, while the 2.3L I4 gains a sportier, more aggressive character. At a steady highway cruise, there is minimal difference from stock. The sound is inside the engine bay, not an exhaust-level volume change.
Q: Is it safe to drive in the rain?
A: Yes — normal rain and wet roads are not an issue with the filter positioned inside the engine bay. However, avoid driving through standing water deep enough to submerge the front bumper. As with any aftermarket intake, there is a risk of hydrolock if the filter is fully submerged. If you live in a flood-prone area, a hydro-shield filter sock is recommended (sold separately).
Q: What's the pipe finish and will it rust?
A: The intake tube is 6061 aluminum with a black powder-coated finish. Aluminum does not rust, and the powder coating adds a durable protective layer against engine bay heat, road salt, and cosmetic wear. It will maintain its appearance for years under normal conditions.
Q: Does this replace the intake manifold?
A: No. This kit replaces the airbox, intake tubing, and filter upstream of the throttle body. The intake manifold — which distributes air from the throttle body to the cylinders — is an entirely separate engine component and is not affected or replaced by this kit. If your intake manifold has a crack or vacuum leak, this intake will not fix it.
