NOTE: When modifying the exhaust system, a connecting pipe/ mid-pipe is usually needed to join the exhaust header and catback exhaust. The purpose of this pipe is to ensure smooth exhaust flow and prevent leaks. It's recommended to refer to the manufacturer's instructions or consult a professional during installation to ensure everything fits properly.

Up-pipes and downpipes – What do they do?

Up-pipe is a piping that connects the exhaust manifold with the turbo. Exhaust gases enter the turbo from the up-pipe. Down-pipe is a piping that connects the turbo with the rest of the exhaust pipe. Exhaust gases leave the turbo from the down-pipe.  

What does a downpipe do?
The downpipe on your turbocharged vehicle is directing the exhaust gases out of the turbine housing into the exhaust system. An aftermarket downpipe will typically be larger in diameter and either use a high-flowing catalytic converter or remove the catalytic converter altogether. By removing the factory downpipe and replacing it with a high-flowing unit you are allowing the turbo to move gases away from the turbine which creates more power. Since the factory restrictions are now gone you can increase the boost on the vehicle as the factory downpipe is a choking point for performance.
