An often overlooked item with maintenance is the maintenance of the cooling systems. This is an especially critical step for the 6.0L Powerstroke and if you haven't maintained the cooling system NOW is the time to do so.
There are a lot of myths and misconceptions regarding the 6.0L engine and while I will not dive into each of these, I want to focus on the cooling system and why it is critical to prevent VERY costly repairs in the future.
The 6.0 is a HEUI engine which basically means that the injectors are hydraulically operated. The hydraulic fluid used is engine oil. The 6.0 is equipped with a liquid to liquid oil cooler to keep oil temperatures from "cooking" your engine and components. This oil cooler is prone to clogging which in turn causes 2 major problems. Problem #1, the clogging of the oil cooler restricts the coolant to the EGR cooler which can cause that to fail dumping coolant into your engine (blown head gaskets). Problem #2 excessive engine oil temperature will cause failures of components which rely on oil (injectors, turbo's and all other internally lubricated components).
To keep this from occurring, it is CRITICAL to flush your cooling system on a regular basis to remove any potential contaminates from the oil cooler there by increasing the dependability and longevity of your engine. It is advisable to regularly monitor the Delta T (difference between oil temperature and coolant temperature) while operating the engine under load. If the temperature difference exceeds specification we recommend performing an oil cooler flush. Careful attention to this detail can prevent thousands of dollars of engine and fuel system damage.
